The tournament started out with a game against Gustavus, which ended 13-1. This was our first game playing as the 2009-2010 Saucy Nancies and we played great. It was a really clean game on our part, there were very few easy drops and not too many throw aways. We came together as a team and got shit done!
Next we played Grinnell, which ended 13-2. We continued with our stellar playing.
After Grinnell we had the toughest game of the weekend against Iowa State. We came out really aggressive and fighting for every point, which resulted in us being ahead the entire game. Some highlights I remember... Megan had some great hucs, KP and Alli got some skys, and Katie had awesome D... among many other things. Our team especially came together once we figured out how to break their zone D and flow on offensive zone. We had some long points, but we were able to stick it out and win it 10-8 on cap.
After that we had one last game against Purdue on the weirdest field ever. We were all really tired from the previous game but tried to bring up some energy to work on zone defense and finished the day strong with a 13-2 win.
Following this we did the usual tequila toasts, Alyx was a champ downing the tequila disc and was ridiculous for the rest of the night. Megan was awarded the Snuggie because she’s awesome and we love her. The end of the day meant time to proceed to the party... which was, of course, the best party ever. Saucy was challenged in so many boat races it was ridiculous. We started the night strong dominating Grinnell twice, but things went downhill when we lost pretty badly to Iowa State. The fourth and final Boat race was against Truman State who pulled out the victory in a close race. Despite having our first losses of the weekend the party was pretty legit. Many people were table-topped, disc races were held, there was a crop circle party, plenty of keeeeties, and Justine stole a bunch of corn (note to self... feed corn is not the same as sweet corn).
The next day we woke up bright and early to play three more games despite the hours of partying the night before. One would think this would've had an impact on us but we came out just as strong, if not stronger, than the day before. Our first game was against Macalister. We won 13-3 in a clean game keeping the amazing flow that we developed throughout the weekend.
Next we played Truman State, winning 14-5 and redeeming our boat race loss from the night before. Again we played well as a team and worked it all the way to the championship.
In the championship game we played Luther. It was a hard fought game; which, I’m not going to lie, started out a little rough. We started behind (the first time we ever trailed anyone during the tournament) but fortunately came togetherafter the first couple of points. We had lots of greats D's all around... handblocks from Chelsea, Ds by Katie and Jen, KP skying people every disc she went up from... as well as some great offensive layouts by Alli and Sara, and a beautiful OI huc by KP received by Alyx toeing the line plus more stuff that I can't exactly remember right now. Our zone-o looked great and we worked together to get some... (points that is). The final score was 15-6, Saucy victory.
I am so glad I got to be there this weekend. I am so glad I am on the team that I am on. We were seeded 4th and ended up getting 1st against some really strong teams. I have never been more impressed with our ability to work together, trust each other and be awesome. This was an amazingly successful weekend and I hope to see many more like this for the rest of the year. After seeing what we did this weekend I am even more determined to keep getting better and better as an individual and a team. Clearly we have some things to work on (namely chugging…seriously? two boat race loses?) but that will come in time I’m sure. Rookies you are amazing, Vets you rock too. We can keep this up we just need you all to be there, mentally and physically. So keep up the hard work Saucies!
