Fall Wrap Up

Since our first tournament of the year in Grinnell, Saucy Nancy has finished up the fall season with three more tournaments. Our second tournament of the season was Exit 69 in Northfield, MN. We were a little more short on numbers at this tournament, so were only able to take one team. On day one we racked up three wins against Macalester, Minnesota, and ISU X and our first loss of the season in a frustrating, but close game against ISU Y. After play ended on Saturday we ate at our favorite Northfield pizza place then headed back to our UofM friend Jordan's house for toasts and psychiatrist. The next day we started out strong and won 15-3 against St. Olaf Alums. During this game we also got to learn a little bit more about one of our rookies, Lauren, and her fear of snakes. Our last game of the tournament was the semifinals matchup against Carleton. This was a very tiring game for all of us, and although there were some big plays other times we had a lot of trouble getting it in for the score. In the end we lost the game on universe point 11-10. We ended up forfeiting our final one or two games in order to make it back to Iowa City a little earlier and therefore placed 5th(??).

Our next tournament was No Wisconsequences in Milwaukee which is one of our favorite tournaments of the year. We spent Friday night in Madison at Carolyn's house, her parents always feed us really well which we really appreciate... thanks so much!! The excessive amount of pasta we all ate definitely helped out with our wins the next day.

We spent Saturday night at our favorite hotel - the always classy Olympia Resort. This year the party was held at the hotel so it was a little harder for us to get in trouble since we were supplied with entertainment... although I'm pretty sure some people still managed to. During the raffle Andrea got to be the Patagonia ticket drawer, unfortunately only one of us won something but we did get to be Patagonia models the whole weekend and have photographers follow us around. The next day we started our Sunday play with a game against Northwestern. The main thing I remember from this game was our zone defense. Gungho had some pretty solid handlers who caught just about everything, but our cup did a really good job of not letting anything go upfield. We won the game and advanced to quarterfinals against UW-Milwaukee, then semifinals against Luther. During the Luther game we struggled a little bit with their poachy defense, but we matched them with some intense defense of our own which resulted in us making it to finals. The championship game was against Wisconsin's Bella. Over the past couple of years we've had a tough time in every game with them, but this year was different because we finally had the confidence we needed to pull it all together. Our offense was pretty key in this game and it seemed as though we had much fewer unforced errors than in our earlier tough games at Exit 69. One point I remember specifically was a long one during which we took a timeout stuck at their endzone. After regrouping during the time out we ran zone offense all the way to our endzone for a score with each girl on the field touching the disc at least once. Overall though the highlight of the game has to be Katie's grab. Seriously it was some crazy matrix stuff. This intensity and desire to go after the disc no matter what is what won us this game. Winning No Wisconsequences was a huge deal for us because it showed just how far we've come in such a short time. Two years ago at our first appearance at No Wisco our team struggled the entire weekend and ended up placing last. To go from last to first shows how much work we've put in over the past two years and made us all proud to see how serious and committed we are to being the best team we can be. Bonus... we also won ourselves some delicious chipotle burritos and bball pennies, which was pretty cool too. Check out the championship game against Bella Donna at vimeo.

Our last tournament of the season was Missouri Loves Company in Columbia, MO. We were missing a few of our more experienced players this weekend, so our rookies had the opportunity to get in a lot of playing time and really showed us how much they've already improved. Some of the older girls got to try out some new positions on the field both offensively and defensively. On day one we had a good showing and got three wins.

After playing we went back to our Super 8 where we set a new record for noise complaints. We played some jenga and cards with the IHUCs that weren't too lame to go to sleep at 8. Later some of us climbed trees and others made friends with SLU guys, got clotheslined by trucks, and ate Dennys. Fortunately though, we somehow managed not to get kicked out of the hotel and had a place to rest up for our games the next day. We won our first game on Sunday against Oklahoma and then played Colorado in the semis. Our game against Kali was the toughest game we've played yet this year and our offense had trouble getting the disc past them. Kali took half 7-1. In the second half we adjusted our defense to prevent their big hucks from getting off, and although we improved significantly from the first half it wasn't enough to get a win. Our last game of the weekend was against Wisconsin and ended perfectly with a score from Sarah A in her last point with Saucy Nancy.
13-5 Saucy over Oklahoma
7-13 Colorado over Saucy
13-3 Saucy over Wisconsin

Saucy Nancy finished the season with a 28-3 record and is ready to carry that momentum over to the spring.
